Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is the world’s premier youth achievement program for millions of individuals aged 14 to 24, and Hillview is proud to serve as a Licensed Centre. We are thrilled to offer the Bronze Award in Year 9, the Silver Award in Year 10, and the Gold Award in Year 12. Students can begin at any level; however, since each level builds upon the previous one, starting with the Bronze Award is often advantageous.

 

Why do DofE?

Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is an excellent opportunity for young people to discover their potential. It empowers them to forge new friendships, pursue their passions, acquire fresh skills, and make a positive impact in their community. Earning a DofE Award is not only a personal achievement but also an impressive addition to their resumes, appealing to future employers. Additionally, it helps young individuals develop a new self-image and boosts their confidence significantly. We often say that completing the DofE equips you to face any challenges life may present.

DofE is a non-competitive initiative that enables every young person to cultivate self-belief, irrespective of their background, interests, or abilities.

 

Bronze Award

Beginning in September, Year 9 students can embark on their Duke of Edinburgh adventure. The Bronze Award consists of four components: Volunteering, Physical, Skill, and Expedition. Students have the opportunity to select their activities for the first three sections. They are required to engage in their chosen activities for at least one hour per week for a duration of 3 or 6 months. The Expedition entails two days and one night spent in the countryside. We offer thorough training beforehand to ensure everyone is well-prepared for a rewarding experience. Typically, the training weekend occurs in March, followed by the Assessed Expedition in May.

 

Silver Award

The Silver Award is a step up from the Bronze Award, but it follows the same format. The Volunteering, Physical & Skills sections must be completed for longer periods: 2 for 6 months and 1 for 3 months. The Expedition will be longer too, now lasting 3 days and 2 nights. At Silver, students are required to complete a full overnight practice expedition as well. The Practice weekend will be in May, and the Assessed Expedition in June.

 

Gold Award

For Gold, you’ll need to do your programme for at least 12 months. The biggest difference at Gold is you’ll also do a Residential section – staying away from home for five days and

four nights doing a shared activity with people you don’t know. To achieve their Gold Award, your young person will need to complete five sections:

  • Volunteering section: 12 months

  • Physical & Skills section: One section for 12 months and the other section for 6 months.

  • Expedition section: 4 days/3 nights.

  • Residential section: Undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights.

At Hillview, we approach the Gold Award uniquely compared to the previous two levels by not including the expedition or residential sections. This allows participants greater freedom of choice in their expedition options. Numerous external companies organize Gold expeditions and residentials across the country throughout the year, and we are committed to assisting students in finding the right fit for them.

Every young person who earns their Gold Award is invited to a prestigious celebration event held at a Royal Palace, with attendance from a Member of The Royal Family. Celebrating the achievement of a Gold Award is significant, so it’s only fitting that you receive a proper recognition of your remarkable accomplishments.
