English

“We live at the level of our language. Whatever we can articulate, we can imagine or explore.” Ellen Gilchrist

English at Hillview centres around the power of words and advocates the importance of effective communication in all its forms.  We believe that language is a fascinating, dynamic force, both for creative expression and the exchange of ideas.

Students explore an exciting variety of literary texts, from Chaucer to Zephaniah, to develop an understanding of the author’s craft. They also investigate and produce non-fiction texts, including articles, letters, advertisements and websites, allowing them to see the relevance of English in all aspects of life.

Recent opportunities for students have included:  poetry workshops with the performance poet Charlie Dark; entry into the BBC’s ‘Off By Heart’ Shakespeare competition; and the creation of the student newspaper ‘In The Know’.  We are visited regularly by well-known authors such as Cathy Cassidy, Sophie McKenzie and Marcus Sedgwick, who run writing workshops, help us celebrate World Book Day and develop students’ passion for reading.

Through the study of English, students at Hillview develop vital skills in communication, creativity and independent critical thinking, preparing them for success in any educational or career path they choose.
