English
“We live at the level of our language. Whatever we can articulate, we can imagine or explore.” Ellen Gilchrist
At Hillview, the English curriculum emphasizes the power of words and the importance of effective communication in all its forms. We believe language is a fascinating and dynamic tool for both creative expression and the exchange of ideas.
Students engage with a diverse array of literary texts, ranging from Chaucer to Zephaniah, to gain insights into the author’s craft. They also analyze and create non-fiction texts, including articles, letters, advertisements, and websites, helping them recognize the relevance of English in everyday life.
Recent opportunities for students have included poetry workshops with performance poet Charlie Dark, participation in the BBC’s ‘Off By Heart’ Shakespeare competition, and the creation of the student newspaper ‘In The Know’. We are also visited regularly by well-known authors such as Cathy Cassidy, Sophie McKenzie, and Marcus Sedgwick, who lead writing workshops, celebrate World Book Day, and foster a passion for reading among students.
Through the study of English, students at Hillview develop essential skills in communication, creativity, and independent critical thinking, equipping them for success in any educational or career path they choose.
