In a whirlwind of excitement and cultural immersion, a group of Hillview students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Spain, marking the school’s recent Turing trip this February. Departing from the familiar grounds of Tonbridge, the students gathered in the early hours of Sunday, February 23rd, at Sainsbury’s car park, ready for an adventure that promised both learning and fun.

As the clock struck 4:40 am, the anticipation was palpable. Students boarded the minibus bound for Gatwick North Terminal, all buzzing with the energy of early morning travelers. By 9:20 am, they took to the skies, en route to Malaga, where they were scheduled to land at 1:30 pm local time. After a swift transfer to their accommodation at Hotel Las Rosas, the group arrived, ready to settle in and soak up the rich environment that surrounded them.

Each morning commenced with breakfast at a charming restaurant across the street from the hotel. With options ranging from delicious churros and toast to a variety of drinks, students were fueled up for each day of adventures ahead. Once nourished, they eagerly ventured out to immerse themselves in the local culture.

On the first full day in Spain, Monday, students visited a nearby school, allowing them to interact and build connections with local students. This cultural exchange set the tone for the trip, deepening their understanding of Spanish life. After lunch, the group embarked on a short coach journey to Lucena, where the students participated in a hands-on clay workshop. The experience not only ignited their creativity but also offered them a unique glimpse into local artisan traditions.

Tuesday unfolded with another lively breakfast, after which students took a brief trip to Almedinilla. The day was filled with exploring the stunning village, a guided tour of its history, and visits to a museum and a local villa. Midday brought them to La Bodega, a restaurant renowned for its traditional flavors, where they savored a hearty meal. Later, the students participated in a mosaic workshop, delighting in the craftsmanship that is a hallmark of Andalusian culture. They returned to Priego de Córdoba brimming with inspiration and new skills.

Wednesday was all about Granada, as students journeyed for an hour and fifteen minutes to explore this historic city. Walking through its charming streets, they soaked in the architecture and atmosphere, exploring markets while discovering local products. The highlight of the day was a visit to the Alhambra, a stunning palace and fortress that showcases Moorish architecture; students were captivated by its intricate patterns and rich history. Another delicious dinner capped off their adventurous day, reinforcing the group's common bond over shared experiences.

As Thursday arrived, students eagerly anticipated their cookery class at the school. Learning to cook traditional Spanish dishes not only equipped them with new culinary skills but also deepened their understanding of the region's gastronomy. This hands-on experience was a delightful culmination of the cultural exchanges fostered during their trip. Students then enjoyed an afternoon walking tour of Priego, allowing them to appreciate the town's stunning landscapes and vibrant atmosphere.

As the trip drew to a close on Friday, students had one last breakfast at the local spot before heading back to the airport. With memories of laughter, new friendships, and cultural enrichment, they boarded their flight back to Gatwick. By the time they arrived back in Tonbridge around 6 pm, parents were waiting at Sainsbury’s car park, eager to welcome their children home.

Reflecting on the journey, students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn, create, and connect. The Turing trip was not just about travel; it was a pivotal experience that fueled their curiosity and appreciation for culture, art, and friendship. As they look back on this incredible journey to Spain, they carry with them not only memories but also a broader worldview that will undoubtedly shape their futures.
